What makes you feel at home? Is it a familiar sound, a shared meal, a story passed down, or a simple moment of connection?
This isn’t just an exhibition — it’s a space for all of us. Home Through Participation is about the ways we create, share, and hold on to the feeling of home. It asks how we can build it together, protect it, and pass it on. And it invites you to take part.
In this exhibition, five artists of the AKUTSO Collective open up their personal stories of home — not as a fixed place, but as something alive, shaped by people, memories, and everyday actions. OFOE AMEGAVIE spends time along the waterways of his hometown, following stories of his family and community. OFOLI KWEI shows how sport can bring people together, creating belonging where there was none before. ANNERTEY preserves simple, homely things by turning them into digital keepsakes for the future. AGBONGUA J. KWADWO BUENORTEY documents the traditions, culture, and everyday stories of his home region. And DÉSIRÉ ELI-ZAFOE visits communities, spending time in their homes to highlight identity, rituals, and the small, meaningful moments that shape our lives.
But this story isn’t complete without you. The title Home Through Participation means exactly that — home is made through the things we do, the memories we share, and the spaces we open to others. As you move through the exhibition, we invite you to reflect, to share, and to think about what home means to you. What makes you feel at home? Who or what would you bring into this space?
By the end, we hope this place feels a little like home to you too.
Welcome and make yourself comfortable.
AKUTSO is a multidisciplinary collective based in Accra, Ghana. Derived from the Ga word for neighborhood or community, AKUTSO is more than a collective; it’s a satellite community, operating from remote locations in Ghana and dedicated to creating safe, inspiring spaces where creatives can collaborate, experiment, and reimagine the intersections of art, design, and technology. Through research, bold projects, and cross-disciplinary collaboration, AKUTSO challenges stereotypes and reshapes how stories are told.
The exhibition Home Through Participation is on at Nuku Studio’s Center for Photographic Research and Practice in Tamale from 3 to 31 March 2025.
