Nuku Studio opens “[re]fractions” pop-up exhibition / by JULIANE REISSIG

On 10 November 2023 at its Center for Photographic Research and Practice in Tamale, Nuku Studio opened the pop-up exhibition titled “[re]fractions”. It brings together a collection of photographic work by Fibi Afloe, Abdul-Haqq Mahama, Misper Apawu, Ofoe Amegavie, Francis Kokoroko, Eric Gyamfi and Nii Obodai.

The collective represents some of Ghana’s most dedicated, progressive, and independently motivated young artists in photography. Their art probes the edges and understories of social and environmental space. The popup exhibition by Nuku reflects and refracts their stories.

Nuku Studio is a labor of love that builds off a legacy of artists from around the continent mentoring future generations. Nuku’s founder Nii Obodai passes on this gift, by cultivating space and community for creative practice. Obodai’s techniques in photography learn from schools of thought in painting, sculpture, music, architecture, and spirituality. This interdisciplinary ethos pervades the practices of artists he mentors, many of whom go on to mentor others.

At Nuku, photography becomes a point of departure for giving value to creative potential writ large. The institution establishes infrastructure for artists to explore their imaginations while participating in social economies.

“[re]fractions” was realized in collaboration with Carmen Egger (Exhibition Design) and Isabel Abreu (Curatorial Support).

The pop-up exhibition will be on display until December 2023.
