West Africa Visual Journalism Fellowship supports emerging talent and connects them to the international community / by JULIANE REISSIG

In 2020, three talents were selected for the West Africa Visual Journalism Fellowship, the World Press Photo Foundation’s new educational program in partnership with the Chocolonely Foundation:

  • Ofoe Amegavie, Ghana

  • Adrien Bitibaly, Burkina Faso

  • Aka Aboubakhr Thierry Kouame, Côte d'Ivoire

Three mentors supported and advised the fellows throughout the year: Emilie Regnier, Canada/Haiti; Nii Obodai, Ghana; and Marc Prust, The Netherlands.

The first workshop took place in Accra, Ghana at the beginning of February 2020 and was organised together with the local partner Nuku Studio.

The final projects of the three photographers tell stories of West African communities, ranging from mythology and witchcraft, the importance of social cohesion, and the restoration and preservation of coastal ecosystems. The projects have been published on World Press Photo’s website and social media, and were displayed in an exhibition in each of the fellows’ countries of origin.
